Commented walk through the cinematic Brno
The tour is 3 km long and it will take everyone who is Interested through the city centre to all the places where people of Brno were able to go see films during the course of the last 119 years. We will start with the cinema which opened 85 years ago under the name-abbreviation Dopz — the Scala cinema near Moravian Square. Our tour finishes in the spirit of this year’s leitmovie of Brno 16 near the house of the First Republic celebrity Hugo Haas. During our journey we will for example stop by such places as where people used to go to a round-the-clock cinema while waiting for the train, places where there used to be the Brno music hall at the beginning of the 20th century, places where there were first shown films in Brno (for example The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots, or The Barber Scene), or places where people could watch films while walking through the city. We will take a look at modernist and functionalist palaces which used to have functioning cinemas — we will talk about their origins and what kind of films they used to play there, who used to operate them, what the interior looked like and how the audience changed through time.
