EXHIBITION: Matěj Smetana — AB

Matěj Smetana is an essential and positive link of the local art scene chain. His conceptual foundation is pure and his work is friendly didactic. The topics he is interested in are as diverse as the methods he devises for each realisation. His works can be perceived as a thick web of ideas, which, although in real time resulting in a concrete object — video or installation, later result in their “little brothers”. Similarly in Art Gallery Matěj opens the topic of morphing, a principle that could easily communicate with his much older works. The author has covered the walls of gallery with 676 characters — double letters. These can in their totality create more combinations. To be able to read these individualities we will need to go back in front of the wall of the café itself. Matěj is interested in morphing mostly because of the work with image (character) sequences and the search for exhausting amounts of variants based on a set of rules. The current way to do this — via computer — is not what excites him. He likes to go for the more manual way of creating morphing. More of an artisan way, let’s say. Metamorphosis, interphase, polygon, hybrid. Has the author become an efficient work unit?

Within the scope of his art show at the Art Gallery the author himself will present the newest videos Mechanical Principles (2015), Light (2014) and also some older ones, such as Taylorism (2013), Taylorism 2 (2013), or Eclipse of the Sun (2012). Not even the regular visitors of the Art cinema will be robbed off the experience as they will have the opportunity to watch Smetana’s 1 minute pre-film appetisers.
